Mok, Age 14, Thailand

When Mok was very young, he lost his mother to AIDS, and soon after, his father abandoned him to find work in another province in Thailand. Mok moved in with his grandmother. The two struggled to meet their basic needs.

Now 14 years old, Mok knows that he is HIV positive. Because of the risk of transmission from mother to child and because of the increased chance of missing out on basic services and protection, children orphaned by AIDS face a higher risk of being HIV positive themselves. Mok was forced to stop attending school due to poor health, stigmatization, and harassment.

Thanks to the intervention and assistance of an organization operating in his community*, which helped his grandmother breed fish in the pond behind their house and provided counseling and assistance with his health needs, Mok sees a brighter future ahead.

Mok is one of millions of young children who suffer stigmatization and discrimination because they are HIV positive or because they are orphans. Mok fortunately received support that enabled him to rise above these challenges. Most AIDS orphans are not so fortunate. Fewer than 1 in 10 AIDS orphans received any external support. Help us ensure that more children receive the care and guidance they need. Act Now!.
